Katherine Dorman
Age 13
Katherine (Katie) Dorman is at 8th Grader at the Vista Academy of the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA). An excellent student, regularly earning academic recognition, she is also active in Academy Players in addition to VAPA's new harp program, which she helped launch. In only her second year of harp training, she was active as a student teacher for new students. Katie was born in La Mesa, California and is the only native Californian in her family, which includes her older brother and two older sisters. She also has 2 nephews, Jackson, age three, and Lucas, born in June 2002.
Katie's musical background started with music appreciation and understanding, and expanded to piano lessons five years ago. She is active in the National Piano Guild and the Certificate of Merit program and annually participates in their competitions and examinations, where she excels. As part of a national school competition, Katie entered an original piano composition that she created. She won first place in the VAPA competition with "Presto's Purr."
Katie is accustomed to public performances. She has been playing the piano at both Spring and Christmas recitals for the last five years. Lately she has added the harp to these recitals. Additionally, Katie has been taking dance classes and performing in the studio's annual recital at El Camino High School, the Del Mar Fair, and local Christmas parades for the last eight years. Currently, Katie is enrolled in Jazz, Tap, and Ballet classes.
Katie has been an active computer user since the age of two and has been building web pages for fun the last couple of years. An avid reader, Katie also loves a "good book." She enjoys several popular authors and is almost always waiting for the "next book" to be released. She also loves computer games and "surfing the web." She enjoys travel, especially the short weekends to the desert. She wants to return to Corpus Christi, Texas to visit her sister and also venture to New Orleans, Louisiana to see her aunt. She also enjoys "bargain hunting" at the mall with her friends.
